Buying a used PS5 in India: a 12 point checklist before you pay

A used PS5 can save you thousands, or cost you a lot more. Here is exactly what to check, test and ask before you hand over the money.

Short answer: a used PS5 is a good buy if you test it in person, see the original invoice and pay only after everything works. Never pay in advance for a console you haven’t seen, however good the price looks.

GameJila started life as a used game shop, so we’ve seen most of the ways a second-hand deal can go wrong. This is the checklist we’d use ourselves.

Before you meet

  1. Know the model. There’s the original PS5, the slimmer model, the Digital Edition (no disc drive) and the PS5 Pro. Ask which one it is and check the model number on the box or the console sticker.
  2. Check the new price first. A used console only makes sense if it’s clearly cheaper than a new one with full warranty. Festive sales on Amazon.in and Flipkart sometimes bring new consoles close to used prices.
  3. Ask for the invoice. An original bill from an Indian retailer helps you check the purchase date and any remaining warranty. No bill at all is a warning sign.
  4. Meet in a safe public place, ideally somewhere with a TV you can use, or at the seller’s home with someone you trust.

Testing the console

  1. Power it on and leave it running. Play a demanding game for at least 15 minutes. Listen to the fan. A loud, rattling or whining fan is a concern.
  2. Test the disc drive. Bring your own disc and make sure it reads, installs and ejects cleanly.
  3. Check the HDMI port and USB ports. A loose HDMI port is one of the most common faults on second-hand consoles and is costly to repair.
  4. Test the controller properly. Look for stick drift by leaving the sticks untouched in a game menu. Check the triggers, the haptics and the touchpad.
  5. Check storage. Go to Settings, then Storage, and make sure the free space matches the model.

Accounts and ownership

  1. Make sure the seller’s account is removed. Ask them to sign out, deactivate the console as their primary PS5 and do a factory reset in front of you.
  2. Check that it isn’t banned. Sign in with your own account and try to open the PlayStation Store and a game’s online menu.
  3. Pay after testing, by UPI or bank transfer you can trace, and get a simple written note with the date, price and serial number.

What a fair deal looks like

A console in good condition with an invoice, a working controller and the original box is worth more than one without them. If any of those are missing, the price should reflect it. If the seller won’t let you test it, walk away.
