Can you play PS2 games on PS5? Every way that works in India

No, a PS5 can’t play PS2 discs, and neither can a PS4. But you can still play a lot of PS2 games on a PS5: buy them as PS2 Classics on the PlayStation Store, play them through PS Plus Deluxe, or pick up an HD remaster. Your old discs need a PS2 (or a PS3 that supports them).

The PS2 in one paragraph

The PlayStation 2 is the best-selling console ever made, with more than 160 million sold since 2000. In India it was the console a whole generation grew up with. Its biggest sellers were GTA: San Andreas, Gran Turismo 3, GTA: Vice City and Gran Turismo 4.

Way 1: PS2 Classics on the PlayStation Store

Since 2015, Sony has sold a set of PS2 games re-released for PS4. They run on PS5 too. They’re emulated versions of the originals, upscaled to 1080p, and most add trophies.

Good ones to look for:

• Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II, Jak 3 and Jak X
• Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2
• Rogue Galaxy
• Ape Escape 2
• War of the Monsters and Twisted Metal: Black
• Bully, Manhunt, Max Payne, Red Dead Revolver and The Warriors from Rockstar

What you won’t find: the PS2 versions of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas were taken off the store in 2021. If you bought them before then, you can still download them.

Way 2: PS Plus Deluxe (the Classics Catalogue)

In India, PS Plus Deluxe (₹1,109 a month or ₹9,879 a year) includes a Classics Catalogue of PS1, PS2 and PSP games you can download. The UK catalogue has about 47 PS2 games as of October 2026, and India’s list is similar but can differ. Highlights include:

The newer additions use Sony’s improved emulator, which adds rewind, save states and sharper upscaling, and some include full trophy lists. Ratchet & Clank, the 2002 original, has been announced for later in 2026.

One thing to know: in other countries the top tier includes cloud streaming of PS3 games. India’s Deluxe tier doesn’t stream, so those PS3 games aren’t available here.

Way 3: HD remasters and remakes

Many of the PS2’s biggest games came back as remasters or full remakes, which usually look and play better than an emulated original:

The original God of War and God of War II aren’t available on PS4 or PS5 in India at the moment.

What about my old PS2 discs?

They won’t work in a PS5 or PS4. Your options:

• Keep or buy a PS2. Used PS2 consoles turn up regularly on OLX and in gaming shops. Check the disc drive reads games before you pay, and be wary of consoles sold with “100 games” on a hard drive, which usually means a modified console and pirated copies.
• Early PS3 models could play PS2 discs: the original 20GB and 60GB models (CECHA and CECHB) do, later ones don’t. Check the model number before buying a PS3 for this.
• Emulation on PC. PCSX2 is a free, open-source PS2 emulator that runs most of the library well on a decent PC. It needs a BIOS file copied from your own PS2, and you should only play games you own.

Can PS5 play PS2 games?

Not from disc. The PS5 only reads PS5 and PS4 discs. You can play many PS2 games on a PS5 as PS2 Classics from the PlayStation Store, through the PS Plus Deluxe Classics Catalogue, or as HD remasters.

Can PS4 play PS2 discs?

No. The PS4 can’t read PS2 discs either. It plays the digital PS2 Classics sold on the PlayStation Store, and those also run on PS5.

Which PS2 games are on PS Plus?

PS Plus Deluxe has around 47 PS2 games (India’s list can differ slightly), including the Jak and Daxter and Sly Cooper series, the TimeSplitters trilogy, Dark Cloud, Rogue Galaxy, Ape Escape 2, Siren, Psi-Ops and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. The list changes over time.

Are PS2 Classics on PS5 upscaled?

Yes. The PS2 Classics on the store run at an upscaled 1080p, and the newer PS Plus re-releases add sharper upscaling plus rewind and save states. Most also have trophies.

Can I play GTA San Andreas on PS5?

Not the PS2 version, unless you bought it before it left the store in 2021. GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, with remastered versions of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas, is available for PS5 and PS4.

What is the best-selling PS2 game?

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, at over 17 million copies, followed by Gran Turismo 3 and GTA: Vice City.
