Is it worth it?
An essential action game, and a great place to start even if you have never played the older ones. The PC version is excellent if your machine can handle it. Play it before Ragnarok, which continues the story directly.

About God of War (2018)
God of War moves Kratos away from Greek myth and into the world of Norse gods. Years after the events of the earlier games, he lives quietly in the woods with his young son, Atreus. When Atreus’s mother dies, they set out to scatter her ashes from the highest peak in the realms, and the gods start taking an interest.
The whole game is shown in one continuous camera shot, with no cuts from the first scene to the last. Combat is closer and heavier than in the older games, built around the Leviathan Axe, which you can throw and call back to your hand. Atreus fights alongside you with his bow and grows more useful as the story goes on.
The story is what makes it special. Kratos is trying to be a better father than his own, and the game gives that struggle room to breathe.
The main story takes around 20 hours, with plenty of optional realms and tough Valkyrie fights afterwards. The sequel, God of War Ragnarok, picks up right where this ends.
