Short answer: for a long journey with no signal, our favourites are Stardew Valley, Minecraft and Dead Cells if you don’t mind paying once, and Alto’s Odyssey, Subway Surfers and Hill Climb Racing if you want something free.
All of these work offline once installed. Open each one once while you’re still connected, as some download extra data on first launch.
Paid games worth every rupee
Stardew Valley
The full farming life game from PC and console, with nothing cut out. It plays brilliantly on a phone and can easily last you months. No ads and no in-app purchases.
Minecraft
Survival mode works offline, and it’s the same building game millions of people grew up with. Great for long trips and for kids.
Dead Cells
A fast action game that feels just as good on a touchscreen as it does with a controller. Each run is short, which suits commuting.
Monument Valley 2
A calm, gorgeous puzzle game built around impossible architecture. Short, but every level is a small work of art.
Free games that work offline
Alto’s Odyssey
Endless sandboarding across deserts and canyons, with a beautiful soundtrack. The “Zen mode” is perfect for winding down.
Subway Surfers
The classic endless runner still plays well offline, and you can easily pick it up for two minutes at a time.
Hill Climb Racing
Simple physics, lots of vehicles and a surprising amount of challenge. Very light on storage and battery.
Shadow Fight 2
A stylish fighting game with a long single-player story mode that doesn’t need a connection.
Mini Militia
Play the solo training mode offline, or connect with friends over a local hotspot for proper multiplayer without mobile data.
Tips for offline gaming
- Turn on flight mode. You’ll save battery and avoid most ads in free games.
- Download games over Wi-Fi before you leave, as some are over 1 GB.
- Lower the screen brightness and frame rate in the game’s settings to make your battery last longer.
