12 great games that run on a low-end PC or laptop

No graphics card, no problem. Twelve brilliant PC games that run well on integrated graphics and older laptops, from Stardew Valley to Hades.

Short answer: you don’t need a gaming PC to play some of the best games ever made. Every game on this list runs comfortably on a typical office laptop or an older desktop with integrated graphics, and most of them cost less than a pizza on a Steam sale.

A quick note before you start: always check the minimum requirements on the store page against your own machine. “Low-end” means different things to different people, and an old dual-core laptop with 4 GB of RAM will struggle with more than a modern budget laptop will.

Stardew Valley

Inherit a farm, grow crops, make friends with the town and lose a hundred hours without noticing. It runs on almost anything, supports co-op, and is regularly discounted on Steam.

Terraria

Dig, build and fight in a 2D world that hides far more depth than it first suggests. Hundreds of bosses, items and secrets, and very light on hardware.

Hollow Knight

A beautiful, tough 2D adventure through a ruined insect kingdom. Hand-drawn art, tight controls and huge value for the price. Its sequel, Silksong, is heavier but still modest.

Hades

One of the best action games of the last decade, and it doesn’t need much to run smoothly. Each escape attempt is short, which makes it perfect for a laptop between classes or meetings.

Celeste

A precise platformer about climbing a mountain, with a story that hits harder than you’d expect. It runs on integrated graphics without breaking a sweat.

Slay the Spire

Build a deck of cards, climb the tower, die and try again. The game that made deck-building roguelikes a whole genre. Very light, very addictive.

Vampire Survivors

You move; your character attacks on their own; the screen slowly fills with chaos. It costs very little and runs on almost any machine.

Portal 2

A puzzle game with some of the funniest writing in gaming, plus a great co-op campaign. It’s old enough to run on modest hardware and still looks clean.

Undertale

A short, clever RPG where you can finish the whole game without hurting anyone. Tiny download, huge reputation.

Dead Cells

Fast, fluid action that rewards practice. Runs smoothly on most laptops and plays well with a controller.

Valorant

Riot built its competitive shooter to run on modest PCs, and it’s free to play. You’ll need a steady internet connection, not a big graphics card.

Among Us

Still one of the best games to play with a group of friends, and it will run on practically any PC or laptop made in the last decade.

Getting more out of a weak PC

  • Plug your laptop in while gaming. Many laptops slow down a lot on battery.
  • Close your browser and background apps before you start.
  • Lower the resolution before lowering everything else. It gives the biggest boost.
  • Keep your graphics drivers updated from Intel, AMD or NVIDIA.
