About Black Myth: Wukong

Black Myth: Wukong is a single-player action RPG from Chinese studio Game Science, built on Unreal Engine 5 and drawn from the classic novel Journey to the West. You play the Destined One, a monkey warrior sent to recover six relics tied to the senses of the legendary Sun Wukong.

The game is split into six chapters, and nearly everything revolves around boss fights. Your main weapon is a staff with three stances, smash, pillar and thrust, and heavy attacks draw on a focus meter you build by landing hits. On top of that you have spells on cooldowns, transformations that let you briefly become an enemy you have defeated, and spirits that add passive bonuses and special moves. Skill points can be reset freely, so it’s easy to experiment with builds.

There is no difficulty slider. Some fights take patience and plenty of retries, though it is generally seen as more forgiving than the hardest Soulslike games. After the credits you unlock New Game Plus and a boss rush mode.

It was one of the biggest launches of 2024. Game Science said it sold more than 10 million copies within days, and it won Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards. A follow-up, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, is in development.

The main story takes roughly 38 hours, with considerably more if you chase secret areas and optional bosses.
